How it works

The assumptions stay visible.

The calculator converts steps to distance from the selected step length, estimates duration from distance and pace, and applies the 2024 Adult Compendium walking MET for the selected pace band. Total energy uses MET × kilograms × hours. Active energy subtracts the one-MET resting component over the same time. Standard METs are population-level conventions and can over- or underestimate an individual’s measured energy use.

How many calories do 10,000 steps burn?

There is no fixed answer. The estimate changes with body weight, step length, pace, hills, surface, and individual physiology. Enter those variables instead of applying one calories-per-step number to everyone.

What is the difference between active and total calories?

Total calories include the energy the body would use at rest during the walking time. Active calories remove a one-MET resting component, which is closer to the exercise-only number shown by some devices.

Why does pace change the estimate?

Pace changes both walking duration and the activity’s MET value. Faster walking generally has a higher energy rate, but it also covers the same estimated distance in less time. Both pieces belong in the calculation.

Why is this different from my watch?

Wearables may use heart rate, age, height, device-specific calibration, GPS, and proprietary models. This calculator intentionally uses a smaller, visible set of inputs so you can inspect the assumptions.

Can I use this for weight-loss planning?

Use it as a rough activity estimate, not as a precise food or weight-loss prescription. Energy balance and health needs are individual, and consumer step and calorie estimates contain uncertainty.
